Kolkata/Siliguri/Darjeeling: The inter-ministerial central teams (IMCT) on Tuesday made extensive visits to healthcare facilities and high-prevalence zones across West Bengal without waiting for an escort from the state police or a liaison officer to guide them.
Team members talked to doctors and patients in Covid hospitals, both private and public, and gathered inputs from locals and policemen on duty in containment zones after surveying select areas in Beliaghata, Salt Lake, Madhyamgram, Badu and Siliguri.
The Kolkata IMCT, led by additional secretary to GoI Apurva Chandra, first surveyed the Beliaghata ID Hospital neighbourhood by taking snapshots of people and the locality before moving to Sealdah near NRS Hospital. The team next went to AMRI Salt Lake and took stock of its infrastructure for treating Covid patients. IMCT’s public health personnel examined the personal protection adopted by the hospital’s frontline doctors and health workers following the death of two senior health professionals in the city.
Team members inquired about the death of the two doctors admitted to the hospital – additional director of health services Biplab Dasgupta and Sisir Mandal.
The team later went to Champadali More at Barasat in North 24 Parganas, an area with high population density. The members took photos of people on the road; crowding of streets could do more harm to the district that already has 57 containment zones. Next stop was GNRC hospital, off Taki Road, where as many as 42 Covid patients were undergoing treatment. The team checked the infrastructure and treatment facilities at the hospital that released two patients on Tuesday after they were cured.
The team also undertook extensive tours of the lanes of North 24 Parganas’ containment zones spread over Birati, Badu, Madhyamgram, North Dum Dum, and interacted with residents and policemen on duty.
The IMCT in Siliguri split into two and visited areas in the Hills and plains. One team went straight to ward 47 of Siliguri Municipal Corporation where a Covid patient died a few days ago. This team then went to Bagdogra’s Kamalpur tea estate to see whether work there conformed to the Centre’s guideline of engaging not more than 25% of workforce. Led by Ajay Gangwar, the Siliguri team also inspected infrastructure at Desun hospital.
The Darjeeling IMCT was satisfied after talking to residents and shopkeepers at Chawkbazar vegetable market. “We found the arrangement better in Darjeeling than Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri and Siliguri,” team leader Vineet Joshi said.
The team also spoke to civic volunteers and officials on duty in the main market about safety protocols. It disapproved of shopping malls selling vegetables. “Why are vegetables being sold at malls? The district administration must look into this,” Joshi said.
They next met senior officials at the Darjeeling district hospital; the superintendent conveyed there were no suspect coronavirus cases.
